Because the newer albums are so much better. They really hit their stride with Heart. And perfected it with SYOF. I almost included On Peak Hill or Krush, but there were too many good other tunes. That said, I did say Vol. 2 is in the works.

That's a pretty good mix tape. I agree that the early stuff isn't as accessible - plus a lot of it now sounds dated IMHO, while Heart and Set Yourself on Fire are timeless. I'd swap out We Don't Want Your Body and The Night Starts Here, and swap in Wasted Daylight and Window Bird instead.

Or just buy them a copy of Heart and The Five Ghosts. :-)

So far I've made mix tapes (cds) for five people that had never heard Stars before. The thing about Stars it that their music is so eclectic, its hard to find a definitive set list. Nightsongs isn't "dated" its just different then the later releases. It fits in really well with their unreleased stuff like Gangster's Apprentice & Drive By. Torq said at the release of Heart that they were moving more into their own sound rather than sounding like someone else but still there's a few gems on Nightsongs (and A lot of Little Lies & The Comeback e.p.) that still hold up as some of Stars' best work. Ultimately I think it comes down to the taste of the individual your making the list for. I played Alchemy for a friend of mine once and she loved it so that ended up on her mix disk when I made one and today its one her favorites.
That being said, if I had to make a playlist for a complete stranger heres how I would play it.....

and that's all that fits onto a disk.....I'd also be really tempted to throw No One Is Born To Be Lonely from Dead Child Star & The Phone Call, Into The Wild, & Love Comes Quickly from Memphis cause its Torq but figures I'd play it strait. Stars is one of those rare bands that has a ton of songs and all of them are good. I also haven't heard The Five Ghosts album yet cause I'm waiting for the release....I got Body and Fixed when it went on the player but I've been holding out cause anticipation is the best part of life.....

I showed my friend YELID first, figuring that seemed to be the easiest way to get someone into Stars, and they didn't like it. But they've become addicted to On Peak Hill.
